Cool mist or warm mist for a bedroom?

Updated by Margot Sandoval. Four types, one table, and the safety line that decides it for most households.

Quick answer

Cool mist in any room where a child or pet sleeps: Consumer Reports recommends it because warm-mist tanks hold scalding water, and the EPA says keep steam units out of reach of children. In an adult bedroom that runs cold, warm mist feels less clammy and sidesteps the mineral problem. Within cool mist, the real choice is ultrasonic, which is silent but sprays minerals, or evaporative, which has a fan but does not.

What people worry about here

Cool mist or warm mist, with a child or a pet in the room?

Cool mist. Consumer Reports recommends cool mist for a nursery or a child's room because a warm-mist tank holds water hot enough to scald, and the EPA tells you to keep steam vaporizers out of the reach of children. Warm mist is a reasonable choice for an adult bedroom that runs cold, and nothing else.

What is the white dust, and how do I stop it?

It is the dissolved minerals from your tap water, dried onto your furniture. The EPA's fact sheet says several studies have shown ultrasonic and impeller humidifiers disperse minerals from the tank into the air. You have three fixes: distilled water, a demineralization cartridge, or an evaporative humidifier, which leaves the minerals in its wick.

How loud is a humidifier at night, really?

Two different kinds of noise. Ultrasonic machines are near-silent with an occasional gurgle, and the makers quote 25 to 28 dB in sleep mode. Evaporative machines have a fan, which reviewers describe as low-level white noise. The decibel figures in the table below all come from the makers; the only noise verdict we have from someone who slept next to the thing is CNN Underscored's, on the MistAire.

How often do I really have to clean it?

Every third day, with the tank emptied and wiped every day it is in use. That is not a brand's upsell, it is the EPA's recommendation, and the reason is that standing water grows microorganisms and ultrasonic units are efficient at spraying them into the room. Empty, scrub off any film or scale, wipe dry, refill.

Livatro stainless 6L

Livatro 6L Stainless Steel Warm Mist Humidifier

16 ratings at the time we collected data
  • Boils the water; 304 stainless tank, dishwasher safe
  • Child lock, screen lock, auto shut-off
  • Auto-clean cycle using citric acid or vinegar

Boiling is the one mechanism where the mineral and microbe argument goes away, and a smooth steel tank is the easiest thing in this category to clean. It is also expensive, barely reviewed, and hot inside.

Buy it if you want steam, stainless and a cleaning cycle, and you accept a new product with few reviews.
Skip it if there are children or pets in the room, or you want a track record. See the Dreo HM717S.

The four types, side by side

TypeHow it worksWhite dustNoiseWatch out for
Ultrasonic humidifier, cool mistA disc vibrates water into visible mistYes, with hard waterNear silent, occasional gurgleEPA names ultrasonic and impeller units as mineral dispersers
Evaporative cool mistA fan pulls air through a wet wickNo, minerals stay in the wickFan noise, like low white noiseWick is a yearly cost, and a clogged one halves the output
Warm mistA heating element warms the waterLess of an issueQuiet, with occasional boiling soundsHot water in the tank; keep away from children
Steam vaporizerBoils the water outrightNoQuietThe EPA singles these out as a burn risk around children

Any air humidifier you can buy is one of these four. Impeller humidifiers, the old spinning-disc design, behave like ultrasonic for the mineral question and are rare now.

Common questions

Is cool mist or warm mist better for a bedroom?

Cool mist for any room a child or pet sleeps in, because a warm-mist tank holds scalding water. Warm mist suits a cold adult bedroom and may feel less clammy in winter. Consumer Reports also advises against warm mist when you have a cold.

Is a vaporizer the same as a humidifier?

A vaporizer boils water and releases steam; it is a warm-mist humidifier by another name. Boiling sidesteps the mineral and microbe questions, which is the upside. The downside is a tank of scalding water, which is why the EPA says keep them away from children.

What is the white dust from my humidifier?

Minerals from your tap water. The EPA says ultrasonic and impeller humidifiers disperse minerals from the tank into the air. Switch to distilled water, fit a demineralization cartridge, or move to an evaporative humidifier, which leaves the minerals in its wick.

Is a humidifier safe in a nursery?

Use cool mist, keep it out of reach, clean it on the EPA's three-day schedule, and keep the room under 50 percent. Anything beyond that, including whether a humidifier helps a particular child's breathing, is a question for your paediatrician rather than a shopping page.

Do I need distilled water in a humidifier?

If you have hard water and an ultrasonic humidifier, yes, or a demineralization cartridge instead. The EPA recommends water with low mineral content for ultrasonic and impeller units. Evaporative and steam units are far less fussy.
