The best small room humidifiers

Updated by Margot Sandoval. Picks from the main list for rooms under about 150 square feet.

Quick answer

In a small bedroom the risk is too much moisture, not too little, so pick the humidifier for bedroom floor area rather than for the biggest tank. A 2 to 3 liter tank is enough: the Levoit Classic 160 at a stated 25 dB, or the Dreo HM311S if you want it to stop on its own at 45 percent. Consumer Reports recommends the Levoit Dual 200S in this size class for the same reason, a humidistat that shuts the machine off at your target.

What people worry about here

How big a humidifier does my bedroom need?

Match the machine to the room, which is the first thing Consumer Reports' humidifier testing lead says in their buying advice, and resist the temptation to oversize. A machine built for 600 square feet in a 120-square-foot bedroom with the door shut will push you past 50 percent and start condensing on the window. The calculator below turns your floor area into a tank size and an output band.

Does it know when to stop, or will it soak the room?

There are three levels. A humidistat with auto mode measures the room and stops at your target; Consumer Reports measures humidistat accuracy and gave the Dreo HM524S top marks for it. An auto shut-off only protects the machine when the tank runs dry. And the cheapest units have neither, which in a sealed bedroom is how you wake up to wet windows.

How loud is a humidifier at night, really?

Two different kinds of noise. Ultrasonic machines are near-silent with an occasional gurgle, and the makers quote 25 to 28 dB in sleep mode. Evaporative machines have a fan, which reviewers describe as low-level white noise. The decibel figures in the table below all come from the makers; the only noise verdict we have from someone who slept next to the thing is CNN Underscored's, on the MistAire.

Skip it if you want to fill it twice a week rather than twice a day. See the MistAire.

Buy it if you want a bigger tank than the Levoit 160 for similar money.

Work it out for your room

Tank size for your room

Bands come from the tank sizes and coverage figures in our October listing data, not from a test. Consumer Reports' advice is the same in one line: match the machine to the room.

What to add

A hygrometer that is not inside the humidifier

SMARTRO SC42 digital hygrometer

Every piece of advice on this site is a number between 30 and 50 percent. Without a second thermometer-hygrometer about three feet from the machine, you are trusting a sensor that sits in the wettest air in the room.

What to look for: A stated accuracy figure, and a display you can read from the bed.

Check today's price on Amazon

A tray under the machine

Waterproof drip tray

Cool mist condenses on cold surfaces. On a wooden nightstand that shows up as a ring, and on a floor it shows up as a damp patch that grows things.

What to look for: A raised lip, and a footprint bigger than the base.

Common questions

What size humidifier do I need for my bedroom?

Work from floor area. Up to about 150 square feet, a 2 to 3 liter tank is enough. A typical 150 to 300 square foot bedroom suits 3 to 4 liters. Above 300 square feet, or with the door open to the rest of the floor, go to 6 liters or an evaporative console. Consumer Reports' testing lead makes the same point from the other direction: do not buy a machine that is too big for the room.

What humidity should I keep my bedroom at?

Between 30 and 50 percent relative humidity. The EPA's fact sheet tells you not to humidify above 50 percent because higher levels encourage biological growth. Buy a separate hygrometer and put it across the room from the machine.

What is the quietest humidifier for sleeping?

On stated figures, the Levoit Superior Studio at 19 dB on its low fan, then the Levoit Classic 160 at 25 dB and the Dreo models at 26 to 28 dB. Those are maker numbers. The only bedroom noise verdict we trust from a person is CNN Underscored's on the Pure Enrichment MistAire, which they describe as virtually no noise.

Is a filter-free humidifier better?

Cheaper to run, not cleaner. Filter-free means ultrasonic, which is the design the EPA singles out for dispersing minerals and microorganisms from the tank. A wick costs money and captures minerals. Consumer Reports does recommend one filter-free model, the Honeywell HUL430B, specifically because nothing needs replacing.

Where should I put a humidifier in a bedroom?

On a flat surface raised at least two feet off the floor, which is Consumer Reports' advice, away from walls and wooden furniture, and not pointed at the bed. Put a tray under it if the surface is wood.
