The best humidifiers with essential oils

Updated by Margot Sandoval. The best humidifiers for bedroom with essential oils, and the one rule that keeps them working.

Quick answer

Buy an air humidifier for bedroom use with a separate aroma tray, and put the oils only in the tray: the Honeywell HUL430 has one, and so do the Dreo and Levoit picks. Oils in the water tank attack plastics and the ultrasonic disc, which is why listings say it outright. If scent is the real goal, a $25 diffuser does it better.

What people worry about here

Can I put essential oils in a humidifier?

Only in a tray built for them, never in the water tank, unless the maker explicitly says otherwise. Oils attack the plastics and the ultrasonic disc, and that is how a tank crazes and starts leaking. Several listings in our data say it outright: oils in the side tray only. If aromatherapy is the actual goal, a separate diffuser is a better machine for it.

How often do I really have to clean it?

Every third day, with the tank emptied and wiped every day it is in use. That is not a brand's upsell, it is the EPA's recommendation, and the reason is that standing water grows microorganisms and ultrasonic units are efficient at spraying them into the room. Empty, scrub off any film or scale, wipe dry, refill.

What is the white dust, and how do I stop it?

It is the dissolved minerals from your tap water, dried onto your furniture. The EPA's fact sheet says several studies have shown ultrasonic and impeller humidifiers disperse minerals from the tank into the air. You have three fixes: distilled water, a demineralization cartridge, or an evaporative humidifier, which leaves the minerals in its wick.

Everlasting Comfort 6L

Everlasting Comfort 6L Cool Mist Humidifier

42,000 ratings, no independent test
  • 6 L tank, up to 50 h, 500 sq ft claimed
  • 28 dB stated, filterless, oil tray
  • One of the best-selling bedroom humidifiers on Amazon

This is the humidifier Amazon's algorithm wants you to buy, and nothing is obviously wrong with it. But in a category where Consumer Reports and RTINGS both publish, buying the one nobody tested to save a few dollars is a strange trade.

Buy it if price is the only thing you care about and you trust volume of reviews.
Skip it if you would rather have a lab result than a review count. See the Dreo HM524S.

Why oils in the tank destroy ultrasonic humidifiers

An ultrasonic humidifier works by vibrating a metal disc thousands of times a second under a thin film of water. Essential oils are solvents. Put them in the tank and they soften the plastics, cloud the tank and leave a film on the disc that kills the output. Several listings in our October data say it in plain words: use the side tray only.

A tray or pad is a different thing. The oil evaporates from a felt pad in the airstream and never touches the water path, which is why machines with trays can offer the feature at all.

And the honest version of the advice: if you want scent every night, buy a diffuser. It is the right tool, it costs less than the difference between humidifier models, and you can clean it separately when the oil gums it up.

What to add

Brushes that reach the tank neck

Humidifier cleaning brush set

The EPA asks for a scrub every third day, and the thing that stops people doing it is the tank neck. A $10 brush set turns the job into two minutes.

What to look for: A long soft brush for the tank, a narrow one for the base channel, and nothing metal.

A descaler for hard-water scale

Humidifier cleaning and descaling tablets

Scale is what film and smell grow on. If you see a white crust in the base, plain scrubbing will not shift it.

What to look for: Check your manual first: some makers specify white vinegar or citric acid only.

Common questions

Can I put essential oils in my humidifier?

Only in a dedicated aroma tray. Oils in the water tank attack plastics and the ultrasonic disc, and most listings say so explicitly. If scent is the point, buy a diffuser and run it separately.

How often should I clean a humidifier?

Every third day, and empty and dry the tank every day you use it. That is EPA guidance, not a maker's recommendation. Scrub off scale and film, wipe dry, and rinse thoroughly if you used anything other than water.

What is the white dust from my humidifier?

Minerals from your tap water. The EPA says ultrasonic and impeller humidifiers disperse minerals from the tank into the air. Switch to distilled water, fit a demineralization cartridge, or move to an evaporative humidifier, which leaves the minerals in its wick.

What is the quietest humidifier for sleeping?

On stated figures, the Levoit Superior Studio at 19 dB on its low fan, then the Levoit Classic 160 at 25 dB and the Dreo models at 26 to 28 dB. Those are maker numbers. The only bedroom noise verdict we trust from a person is CNN Underscored's on the Pure Enrichment MistAire, which they describe as virtually no noise.
